Across the U.S., more than 15 million households struggle to put food on the table every day.1 At TJX, we aim to help those who are affected by hunger in our communities by investing in hunger relief organizations as part of our long-standing commitment to support causes that help promote the health of families and children.
Beginning in 2015, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods teamed up to help address this problem by raising money for food bank organizations one weekend in November, with Sierra Trading Post and Homesense joining the effort in 2017. In 2017, we were pleased to provide more than $2 million to support more than 150 food banks across the country, thanks to generous in-store donations from our customers, together with a donation from The TJX Foundation. As a result, we helped provide over 21 million meals2 to people in need…from Spokane, Washington, to Dallas, Texas, to Auburn, Maine.
In addition to this November fundraising campaign, many TJX Associates are involved year-round in these efforts. By volunteering their time at local food banks and holding drives at our distribution centers, stores, and corporate offices, our Associates champion the cause and make a hands-on difference to help families in need. In all, we support more than 300 hunger relief organizations across the country annually.
One of the non-profit organizations that TJX collaborates with regularly is The Greater Boston Food Bank, the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Last year alone, The Greater Boston Food Bank distributed almost 61 million pounds of food, enough to provide 50 million healthy meals. Each month, more than 140,000 people eat something from The Greater Boston Food Bank. The agency distributes food to 190 cities and towns across eastern Massachusetts through its 533 member agencies and 65 direct distribution sites, such as food pantries, community meal programs, shelters and mobile markets.
“In Eastern Massachusetts, more than half a million people struggle day-to-day to have enough to eat,” said Catherine D’Amato, president and CEO of The Greater Boston Food Bank. “TJX’s support this year has had a direct impact, enabling us to provide nearly 270,000 healthy meals to those in need. We are grateful for their commitment to helping to end hunger in our community.”
